Rule 34 is for the lack of a better word for it, a rule. This is also the case when talking about characters on any type of media. No matter how unlikely, there's usually someone who ships __ and __ even though it shouldn't happen. There are two characters I find especially dear to me, and finding out someone ships them makes me more than a little queezy.
For instance, Tintin. Tintin's sexuality was never an issue, he didn't date, he adventured. I for one would like to appreciate his adventures for what they were. I feel that people who ship these two (Tintin and Captain Haddock) don't really like the fandom itself, and feel it lacks something which only romance can produce. Tintin never dated during the time we saw him. I feel that Hergé's works (among other things) show that it's okay for someone to be courageous and witty and yet not have a relationship, which is something I want to believe.
Another one is Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. My take on Sherlock is a very complex one and might seem contradictory at thimes, but hey, blogus meus, reglae meae. So, Sherlock. Another character whose sexuality was a big question mark. Granted, he "dated" one woman for the sake of furthering a case, but still, mostly he remained celibate. I've always felt kind of put off by this pairing in general (that didn't stop me from reading some fics/watching videos on them. Hey, they were well-made!). I cannot pin-point exactly why that is but I reckon it has something to do with what I already described on Tintin: I oppose the notion that a story without romance is an incomplete story. I also believe that Watson is genuinely straight. Holmes on the other hand was married to his work. Nonetheless, I have to add one exception to this rule.
I followed your ffnet. profile here. I totally agree with you on Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. While I do tend to tread both sides of the fandom pond with this one, for these two, their partnership is what I enjoy most, their loyalty to each other as true friends.
