Firefly Serenity - Pilot

Joss Whedon's Firefly only lasted one season, but during its short run it gathered a fairly loyal fanbase. I was curious, so I finally watched the first episode/pilot, Serenity.

It took off a bit slowly, and I was about to stop watching many times and continue later, but the characters sucked me in. Hour and a half later, I realized I had actually enjoyed myself. I imagine later episodes will contain much more substance plot-wise, as in this pilot we mostly got introduced to the characters, realize that Summer Glau's presence on board is a problem and see the characters sell some nutritional packages.

We have the captain (aka Captain Hammer from Doctor Horrible's sing-along-blog), who has his own sense of humor and justice. There's also a priest, who seems to miss the quiet life of the abbey. We have a courtesan (the ever-lovely Ori priestess from SG-1. I just want to eat her.) who's friends with Kaylée (?), a sweet mechanic who gets shot by a fed. Seemingly second-in-command of the captain (also seen on Angel or Buffy), her boyfriend is also the pilot (who looks familiar, but I can't figure out from where I know him).
I'm sorry, I'm afraid to google info on the characters since they might (=probably) contain spoilers. There's also the usual hot-head who's a mix between two actors that come to my mind every time I see him (Michael Shanks and John Connor's uncle from the Sarah Connor Chronicles). The captain seems to have a past with the courtesan. They're not exactly a couple, though. Maybe they were together before she took on extra-curricular activities.

The end of the episode features a courtesan blessing a priest. Take that imagery. All in all, I enjoyed the episode and would consider watching the next one (I just hope it isn't as long as the first one, I should at least pretend to have a life).
